Genomics and Bioinformatics Expertise

The Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics Core, formerly known as Molecular Biology Core, provides a centralized resource for functional genomics and bioinformatic studies including expertise, equipment, and technical capabilities. The infrastructure and technical expertise is primarily to support methods in molecular, functional genomics and bioinformatics studies.

The Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics Core is supported by the Center for Pediatric Research (NIGMS CoBRE NIH P20GM103620).

  • Comprehensive analysis of ChiP-seq data including motif annotation and differential binding between conditions
  • DNAseq data analysis including Whole genome and whole exome (WGS) and (WES)

Meet Our Team

Kamesh Surendran, PhD

Co-Director

Dr. Surendran has extensive experience with studies examining gene expression, transcriptional regulation and function of signaling pathways using genetic approaches. His research is focused on understanding the molecular regulators of kidney development.

Michael Kareta, PhD

Co-Director

Dr. Kareta has broad-ranging experience in the use of genomic assays to investigate multiple cellular mechanisms. Additionally, he is trained in the bioinformatic analysis of large datasets with the goal of incorporating genomic data to explain biological processes. His research is focused on the function of master regulators of cell fate, and how their misregulation can lead to diseases, such as cancer.

Malini Mukherjee, PhD

Core Manager

Dr. Mukherjee is a staff scientist who manages and performs the functional genomics services of the core. She has extensive experience in molecular techniques including nucleic acid isolation and manipulation, quantitative PCR, design and generation of promoter constructs, and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays. Most recently, she has utilized CRISPR/Cas9 for genome editing of cell lines.

Yohannes Tecleab, PhD

Biostatistician

Dr. Tecleab is a biostatistician and assists with experimental design, conducts data analysis, and prepares analysis results. He completed his PhD in population ecology from the University of Groningen and received a MS in statistics at the South Dakota State University. His areas of interest and expertise in statistics are bioinformatics and biostatistics.
